New Years Resolutions

Upgrade your approach and take your 2024 to the next level

While sat in the car on another long and gloriously bleak drive down the M1 today, I was reminded of many past journeys, usually spent cataloguing my failings, and making manifestos for change for the next year.

I LOVE lists and have always gone 100% in for New Year’s resolutions but I realised my approach has evolved from self flagellation (Things to stop doing #376…) to being a little more realistic and constructive.

These principles are also at the heart of my approach to health and nutrition strategy, so I thought now would be a good time to share them!

I’ll be taking on a small number of new clients from mid-January - so get in touch if you’d like to discuss your goals for 2024.

/1. Who are you trying to impress?

Many of us would do well to spend less time worrying about living up to received beliefs, and more on how we will be judged by future generations.

And they tend not to care too much about how clever we are at our jobs, or what we look like - but want us to stay happy and healthy, in touch with our sense of play, to give them time, and to look after the world for them 👦🌎❤️

/2. Remember the 80/20 rule - but turn it upside down!

Maybe you have heard of the 80/20 rule. In a health and nutrition context it generally gets taken to mean that you do the right thing 80% of the time and relax the rules and do whatever you like the other 20%.

I prefer to turn it on its head. Because in many aspects of life work, investments, health habits - just 20% of our actions - or inputs are in fact responsible for 80% of our outputs, or results.

And yes that means that if we identify and control that powerful 20%, the 80% tends to looks after itself.

So how do you identify the correct 20%? It is a case of paying attention - really listening to your body’s response to your actions and being honest with yourself.  It can be tricky to hear that truth through the noise - especially if you’re dealing with many years of subjecting your body to imposed diet and exercise regimes. That is also something that I can help with.

/3. Go from micro manager to CEO (of you)

When we begin the process of change, many of us adopt a somewhat scattergun approach, trying everything until something sticks. No harm in that - trial and error is a pretty good way to get to know ourselves and learn along the way.  But it’s also not the most efficient way to make real progress.

Those things that will be most powerful for you and highly personal, based on a mixture of everything from your genetic make up, health history, lifestyle, body composition, digestive, microbiome and metabolic status.

When we get focused on establishing those few decisions or habits that are particularly important for US - in our own unique bodies, we can stop micro managing everything else. That makes it much easier to  be consistent in sticking with the things that matter - and frees up time to really enjoy life.

So for a fresh perspective on your new years goals, try forgetting those past- orientated scattergun goals, and focus on one or two big things that work for you - and make your inner child (or actual children!) happy 😃
